Whiteboard: Start With Why
Applying Simon Sinek’s Framework on How Great Leaders Drive Action with Purpose
More than three years ago, I created this whiteboard as a young 2ndLt, inspired by Simon Sinek’s “Start With Why” and his Golden Circle framework. I’ve been a fan of this concept ever since, as it has not only transformed how I approach leadership but also how I communicate the purpose behind the work we do in COMMSTRAT.
Sinek’s framework emphasizes that starting with “why”—the core belief or purpose behind what we do—helps align actions and results in a more meaningful way. This idea resonated with me as I began leading Marines, because I wanted them to understand not just the mechanics of their work, but why it mattered.
This whiteboard, while COMMSTRAT-specific, serves as a reminder that every mission, every product we create, must be rooted in a deeper purpose. It’s about more than just producing visual content; it’s about contextualizing Marine Corps operations and building trust and credibility with our audiences. The “why” drives everything, and when we’re clear on that, the “how” and “what” become much more effective.
Looking back now, I might reword some aspects, but the core message still stands strong. Through the lens of a junior COMMSTRAT Marine, who focuses on developing imagery and visual information products, this still digs into the importance of starting with purpose—something I believe is essential for any team or leader.
Sinek’s work continues to shape how I approach leadership and communication, and this board is just one example of how applying “Start With Why” can foster clarity and inspiration within a team.
As I prepare to transition from the Marine Corps, I’m archiving a collection of my old whiteboards here on Substack. These boards represent years of leadership, communication strategy, and visual storytelling work. While some of the content may be dated, the lessons and insights remain valuable. This archive will serve as a permanent home for these materials, reflecting my growth and passion for purpose-driven leadership and effective communication throughout my Marine Corps career.
This makes me wonder if you can relate this (Start with why) and translate it to CV, CC, CR’s and COG. Nice work on these, I enjoy reading them.
Best of luck on your transition. I’m really enjoying your boards.
